Southern Africa is currently experiencing the worst drought in over a century. The drought brings consequences for almost every industry in Southern Africa: the maize harvest is minimal, hydro-electric energy production is disrupted, and unemployment rates rise. Many countries are seeking to import large quantities of what used to be their largest export—corn. The resulting food insecurity has become a crisis that is affecting more than 32 million people. In the latest publication from Athabasca University Press, Norman Temple and Nelia Steyn, along with nutrition experts, a number of whom are based in Africa, have designed a textbook for community nutritionists in developing countries. The contributors to Community Nutrition for Developing Countries discuss the food and nutrition situation in developing countries throughout the world, focusing on topics such as lifecycle nutrition, the role of nutrition in the prevention and treatment of disease, the role of government in nutrition, and food safety.
