We’ve had some exceptionally cold days this Edmonton winter and while we love the snow, we sometimes need a reminder that warmer days are on their way. Luckily, our spring catalogue has just arrived in the office! Here’s a sample of what’s forthcoming.
April 2017. The first book we have to look forward to is An Ethnohistorian in Rupert’s Land by Jennifer Brown. In the eighteen essays gathered in this collection, we revisit Jennifer Brown’s exceptional work. Brown investigates the diverse relationships that formed between the Algonquian community in the area known as Rupert’s Land and various newcomers such as fur traders, missionaries, and anthropologists.
May 2017. In May, we shift gears to take a look at labour organization in southern Alberta. In Defying Expectations, Jason Foster combines personal experience and research to show why the unlikely pairing of UFCW 401 and the employees of the Lakeside Packers meat-packing plant resulted in a successful strike against an anti-union company and what their victory might mean for organizing immigrants, women, and youth.
July 2017. In the summer, take a road trip down to Montana with John Brumley and explore the more than one thousand artifacts found in Lookout Cave. With almost 100 illustrations, Lookout Cave showcases the unique characteristics of the cave and its usually perishable artifacts and offers more insight into Plains culture.
